Pokemon Go January Events Bring New Gen 5 Pokemon, A Returning Legendary, And More

2020 has begun, and Pokemon Go is kicking off the new year with a variety of in-game activities. Niantic has outlined some of the events it has lined up for the hit Pokemon mobile game in January, and they include the return of a Legendary, a new Research Breakthrough reward, the debut of new Gen 5 Pokemon, and more.

First, Niantic will roll out another new Special Research questline revolving around the villainous Team Rocket. Like December's Team Rocket Special Research, this questline will culminate in a battle with Team Rocket boss Giovanni, and if you can defeat him, you'll earn a chance to capture another Shadow Legendary Pokemon, Moltres.

A new month also means a new batch of Field Research tasks to complete. Each time you achieve a Research Breakthrough in January, you'll encounter a special Lapras with either Ice Shard or Ice Beam. The last time you could get a Lapras with either of these attacks was back in 2018, making this another chance to add one to your collection if you missed it the first time around.

On top of that, the Adventure Sync Hatchathon event is coming back from January 2-16. During that time, you'll be able to earn rewards like extra Stardust, Rare Candies, and a Unova Stone--which is useful for evolving certain Gen 5 Pokemon--by walking certain distances. You'll also be able to hatch and encounter wild Pokemon that are wearing party hats during the event.

Shortly after the Hatchathon kicks off, the Legendary Pokemon Heatran will make its return to Pokemon Go. You'll be able to find the Lava Dome Pokemon in five-star Raids from January 7 to February 4, and this time around, you'll also have a chance to encounter its Shiny form.

Finally, Niantic is teasing that some more new Pokemon will begin appearing in Pokemon Go soon. The developer has hinted that more Pokemon originally discovered in the Unova region are on their way to the mobile game, although it hasn't shared any more details beyond that, so it remains to be seen which new Gen 5 monsters will debut next month.

You can read more details about Pokemon Go's January events on the game's official website. In the meantime, you have until January 7 to catch the game's current Legendary, Virizion. Pokemon Go's January Community Day is also set for Sunday, January 19, although Niantic hasn't revealed what the featured Pokemon will be just yet. You can catch up on more Pokemon Go news below.

Canadian military police assigned Pokemon Go after fans invade bases

a group of people looking at a cellphone: Pokemon Go sparked a global frenzy as users of the gaming app hunt for virtual cartoon characters © ISAAC LAWRENCE Pokemon Go sparked a global frenzy as users of the gaming app hunt for virtual cartoon characters

At least three military police officers were ordered to play Pokemon Go in Canadian bases across the country, after players invaded the facilities in a quest to catch them all.

The interlopers were not foreign agents but fans of the wildly popular Pokemon Go app -- launched in 2016 -- trying to capture as many of the game's virtual characters as possible and even wandering into restricted army areas.

A surge in the number of suspects being apprehended in the summer after the game's release puzzled the army, according to internal documents obtained by Canadian public television channel CBC.

"Plse advise the Commissionaires that apparently Fort Frontenac is both a PokeGym and a PokeStop," Major Jeff Monaghan at Canadian Forces Base Kingston wrote.

"I will be completely honest in that I have not idea what that is," he said in a message among the nearly 500 pages of military documents obtained by CBC under an access to information request.

At least three military police officers, at different bases across the country, were assigned to wander around army facilities with phones and notebooks in hand to search for virtual Pokemon infrastructure and characters.

"We should almost hire a 12-year-old to help us out with this," wrote security expert David Levenick at CFB Borden in Ontario, 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Toronto.

At the entrance to the base, one woman was caught playing Pokemon Go while her three children were climbing over tanks.

A man separately arrested at CFB Borden explained he was just collecting points playing Pokemon Go and told officers: "I have to beat my kids."

Shortly after the release of Pokemon Go, the armed forces even had to issue a public notice warning players not to venture onto military bases.

But some saw a positive side to the influx of Pokemon hunters.

"Maybe some extra people will visit the museum!," wrote Major Alicia Saucier at CFB Petawawa, Ontario, where the garrison museum was a game hotspot.

The arrival of Pokemon Go left a baffled Canadian military struggling to understand a surge in trespassing, newly released documents show.

When the game was launched in 2016, civilians started walking and driving on to operational bases at all hours.

"Plse advise the Commissionaires that apparently Fort Frontenac is both a PokeGym and a PokeStop," one email from a major read.

"I will be completely honest in that I have no idea what that is."

The documents were released to national broadcaster CBC in response to an information request. The news organisation had spotted a criminal advisory in July 2016 - eight days after the game's release, warning police that many defence locations were "game landmarks".

Three and a half years later, the Canadian military delivered almost 500 pages of documents to CBC.

  • Pokemon Go: All you need to know
  • Pokemon Go 'trespass' legal action settled
  • 'How Pokémon Go has changed my life'
  • In one instance, two men drove a van into an air force base near Toronto just before midnight, CBC reports. A corporal confronted the occupants and found them playing with their smartphones. That was on July 10 - just three days after the app's release.

The game is based on catching randomly-generated pocket monsters as the player walks through the real world, and also checking into landmarks.

The problem - which became apparent shortly after launch - was that many places designated as "pokestops" or "gyms" by the app were not, in fact, public.

"There's a game out there taking off like gangbusters, and it requires people to move to digitally cached locations to get points" a colonel in Petawawa wrote, as military officials tried to understand the sudden influx of trespassers.

"The game's premise seems to be going to the 'PokeStops/Gyms' to collect 'Pokemons' (we should almost hire a 12-year-old to help us out with this)," wrote one security expert at a base in Borden - also in Ontario.

In another incident, one woman was found at the Borden base playing the game while her three children climbed over tanks. Another man at the base, stopped by officers, told them: "I have to beat my kids" at the game.

As part of the military response, at least three officers at different bases were assigned the task of playing Pokemon Go on site, and logging the appearance of every gym, Pokestop, and wild monster.

But the correspondence was not all hostile. One major at Petawawa wrote that perhaps more people would visit the museum on the base.

At Halifax, in Nova Scotia, recommended that an additional Pokestop be added near the museum, and that the museum itself be upgraded to a Pokemon gym to increase footfall.

At the time, media reports of accidents and trespassing by players was widespread around the world.

For example, a month after the game's launch, UK police had logged hundreds of incidents involving the game - including robberies, thefts, assaults and driving offences.

One player in Wyoming discovered a dead body, while the Pentagon reportedly banned the game from government-issued phones.

In the three and a half years since the launch, player numbers have dropped considerably, but Pokemon Go retains a loyal fan base.

Some of its functionality has been integrated into the video game series that inspired it - most notably in Pokemon Let's Go, where monsters caught in the smartphone game could be transferred to the console version.

'Pokémon Sword and Shield' Shiny Magikarp Max Raid Event Offers Easy Shiny

There is a brand-new Max Raid event in Pokémon Sword and Shield that trainers will want to take advantage of, as an increased chance to catch a Shiny Magikarp is officially in effect.

Max Raids in the Wild Area of Sword and Shield are always great to hunt for strong and rare Pokémon, but for a few days trainers will see an increased number of Magikarp Raids. There will also be an increased chance of finding a Shiny Magikarp, which is one of the most iconic Shinies in the franchise.

If you want all the information necessary to catch a Shiny Magikarp, read on for all the details.

POKEMON SWORD AND SHIELD SHINY MAGIKARP EVENT TIME

The Shiny Magikarp Raid event begins Tuesday, December 31 and ends January 3 at 6:59 p.m. EST.

HOW TO CATCH A SHINY MAGIKARP IN SWORD AND SHIELD

The first thing you'll want to do is update you Wild Area News. To do so, access the menu (X) and go to Mystery Gift. After that, trainers should select "Get the Wild Area News" and then connect to the internet if they haven't already.

Once updated, ride around the Wild Area and check your dens. The dens with a Dynamax Pokémon will have the red beam of light coming out of them.

After selecting the den, you'll see a silhouette of the Pokémon. If you see the Magikarp, you can enter by yourself or invite others to help take it down. You won't know if it's a Shiny Magikarp until you enter the battle, so enter as many as possible during the event window. You'll know it's a Shiny Magikarp because it changes from its usual red coloring to gold.

You can also try to hop into other people's Raid Battle by connecting to the internet. You can learn more about that in our Sword and Shield online guide.

    WHAT TO LOOK FOR

So what should you be looking for with these Magikarp raids? Well, Magikarp comes with a few abilities that are worth obtaining. The first is Swift Swim, which upon evolving into Gyarados, turns into Intimidate. This ability is one of the most powerful in all of Pokémon, especially in Double Battles, as it decreases the attack of your opponent's Pokémon.

The other is Magikarp's Hidden Ability, which is Rattled. Upon evolving into Gyarados, Rattled transforms into Moxie, which increases Gyarados' attack stat every time it knocks out a Pokémon.

You don't have to worry about your Shiny Magikarp's Nature or IVs, as you can manipulate them using various means. You can read more about that in our training guide.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are available now for Nintendo Switch.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Max Raid Event Brings Out Lots Of Shiny Magikarp

A new event is now underway in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Much like the games' recent holiday event, which brought an influx of Delibird to Max Raid dens for a brief period of time, this New Year event only runs for a few days and stars another seemingly useless Pokemon: Magikarp.

While this event may not initially sound exciting, what makes it special is that you have a much greater chance of encountering a Shiny Magikarp in Max Raids. Shiny Pokemon are exceedingly rare in Pokemon games, and any Shiny Magikarp you evolve will retains its special coloration, making this a good opportunity to add a few Shiny Gyarados to your collection.

There's another incentive to take on any Magikarp Raids you come across: You'll receive a ton of nuggets when you defeat or capture the Pokemon. These items can be sold for high prices at Poke Marts, allowing you to start the year off with some extra in-game pocket change.

As previously mentioned, the New Year Max Raid event only runs for a couple of days, from December 31 to January 3, so you'll need to act fast if you want to take advantage of it. You can read more details about the event on the official Pokemon website.

In other Pokemon news, Sword and Shield players can claim 20 free Battle Points for a limited time via Mystery Gift. There's also still time to claim a handful of rare Poke Balls and a free Gigantamax Meowth, both of which will only be available until January 15. You can see all the freebies available in Sword and Shield right now in our roundup.
