Pokemon GO
Credit: NianticUpdate: The special research is now live in other parts of the world, so we can look at the full research tasks. Theyâre sort of lame.
At first, I had become stressed out about the idea of the âA Colossal Discovery Eventâ in Pokémon GO. Itâs a new concept for the game: Iâve been to localized events that Iâve bought tickets for in the past, but this is different. Itâs a paid event, like Pokémon GO Fest or a Safari Zone, but it takes place everywhere, all at once, allowing Niantic to sell... a lot more tickets. The only problem is that we have precious little information about what, exactly, itâs going to be.
Thatâs why I was a bit stressed out by whatever it is itâs going to be. I would obviously pay the money to do itâ"itâs my job, after allâ"but Iâm about to leave on a trip and was planning on spending the weekend with my daughter. Which makes the lack of details frustrating: the event takes place from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM, but would I need to play that whole time? If not, for how long? The page mentions that you get free raid passes, but would I need to do raids? And would I need to do the sort of raids that require other people, meaning I would have to go to Center City rather than stick around my own neighborhood? Could I do this casually, while I do other things, or will it require a more concerted effort? The answers to those questions dramatically change my ability to participate in the event, and thatâs a big deal for a paid event.
But hereâs the crucial piece of information: you will be able to finish the special research after the event ends. All you need to do is open Pokémon GO during those hours to receive the special research task, and then you can complete it any time. So while I would still prefer to have answers to those above questions, this does take the pressure off considerably.
But while youâll be able to get Regigigas, the game also specifies that you must play during the event time to receive âall event bonusesâ. What that means, at this point, is still unclear. But the salient point, especially for Pokédex-oriented players like myself, is that you wonât be frozen out if you canât finish during the event.
Iâm still not sure how I feel about this thing overall. Niantic wants to make money, after all, and we live in an ultimately capitalist society, so you canât really fault them. And, crucially, Regigigas is not exclusive to this event: free-to-play players can still pick the thing up through EX Raids, though itâs also harder to get EX Passes if you canât shell out for extra raid passes. But still: thereâs a certain logic to charging extra for a physical event, both because of the work required to set up such an event and the necessarily limited capacity. That doesnât quite hold true for an âeverywhereâ event, but weâll see if itâs worth it tomorrow. Maybe theyâll throw us a deino in there. That would be nice.
